Tools of the Trade: Must-Have Resources Every Creative Needs

Graphics designers require both talent and a creative mind along with technology. No matter where you are, you always need to keep your mind and eyes open for the next inspiration. With that in mind, what tools do we need to keep your mind and eyes open for the next inspiration. With that in mind, what tools do we need as graphic designers for what we do? What resources should we always have with us, on hand when you get that inspiration or idea?

Sketchpad and Pencil

The first thing, which is the fastest, cheapest, and easiest way to transfer an idea is to always have a sketchbook and pencil on hand. No matter where I am or where I go, I always carry my sketchbook with me. It might be a sketch of the sunset over the mountains, a sunrise over the ocean, or a sketch of the latest product for my small business. Whatever the case, always carry a sketchpad and pencil.

Camera

Another great idea, is your camera which allows you to take, edit and manage snapshots and videos to capture those moments to later look back and recreate that image to make it your own. It is also great for snapping pictures of things that you wish to draw later or take inspiration from. Having a phone can also be very useful as it is not only important to make art, but to share it as well. Sharing your art whether it be on Instagram, Facebook, or a personal website, will help to get your name out there.

iPad

With today’s modern technology, one of the best digital resources would the iPad. The iPad is a great way to do art from anywhere whether that be at the beach or in your room. It is more convenient and less expensive than a laptop or desktop. There is a great digital art program that you can get on the iPad that allows you to create artwork. It allows you to adjust colors and layers for those fine details that a standard sketchpad and pencil can’t do. As well as lessens the amount of art supplies you need to carry around and allows you to be more creative. It also my preferred method as it lets me to work on my own designs when I am out and about, allowing me to work from anywhere

Magazines

Another vital resource is looking through magazines and books which gives you an actual hands-on approach for your next inspiration for the next piece that you’re working on. These types of resources allow you to see content layout and design on paper to see how the final products will look. Magazines and books are a culmination of other artists’ work whether that be fashion, interior design, or cooking

Adobe Software

Finally, computer programs such as the Adobe Creative Cloud which consists of Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, are just a few great programs to utilize as a graphic designer. They are typically the preferred software for many graphic design jobs out there. They will enable you to create vector images, edit photos, and create multi page spreads, and can be combined together to make amazing pieces.
